“Deeds of giving are the very foundations of the world.”
These words must have been the driving force behind an initiative by the young cook Josh Thirion and Michelle Korevaar of Spice4Life, who collaborated to stage a Youth Programme that took place at the DuNoon informal settlement on Sunday, 26 July 2015.
Through this initiative, Josh and Michelle visited the kids at DuNoon, outside Tableview, with the aim of making a difference in the lives of those that are in need.
Josh, who is the country’s youngest published cook, gave his time and shared his cooking skills with the kids and that put a smile on the little ones’ faces.
With the help of chef Michelle Greyling, Josh made a pasta dish that fed about 300 kids in a bid to give back to the community and make a difference in other people’s lives.
Retail store Shoprite Checkers helped by providing most of the ingredients that Josh used to make the pasta, mince and veggie dish for the children. Checkers also donated 100 blankets, beanies and gloves for Josh to hand out as part of their #ActsofWarmth initiative.
Twelve 2 litre tubs of water were filled and distributed to crèches in DuNoon.
Josh woke up very early on Saturday morning to get started working on the load of onions he had to peel and chop. His family and friends also jumped in to help.
The children gathered at Mary Anne’s Little House where the event was held. After the little tummies were filled, Josh took his time to sing and play with the kids, with the activities including the skipping rope.
After all the fun that Josh had with the kids he handed out the blankets, the beanies and the gloves for the children to keep warm this winter.
“It was such a great day, a very humbling experience,” said Josh.
